Sump pump cost

Foundation Soils · updated October 5, 2026

Published US prices for installing a sump pump run from $476 to $3,000 a job, and the 6 guides that publish an average put it between $834 and $1,500 (median of those averages $1,281). The full table, 8 guides each with its page date, is below.

Where a pump is most likely to be wanted: 106 US counties have a shallow water table under most of their land and a high share of basements among FEMA flood-loss buildings. They hold 16.2 million homes.

Published prices

Each row is a range one guide publishes for a sump pump installation, with the page's own date; the HomeAdvisor row is for a replacement. They are published ranges, not quotes. For a city's range, see the basement waterproofing cost calculator, which prices a sump pump job for your city.

What the price buys

A retrofit means digging out or breaking the concrete floor, 6 to 10 inches deeper and wider than the pit liner (DOE Building America). The pump goes at the lowest spot of the floor, near a wall so the discharge pipe can run outside, and near an outlet (DOE Building America); the outlet may need to be a GFCI outlet (DOE). The discharge pipe needs a check valve so water doesn't flow back into the pit when the pump shuts off (DOE), and the pit gets a tight-fitting, gasketed cover that is mechanically fastened (DOE), which also keeps soil gases out of the house (DOE).

A pump is one part of a system. In a 1-inch rain, about 1,250 gallons fall on the roof of a 2,000-square-foot house (University of Minnesota Extension), and gutters, downspouts and grade decide how much of it reaches the foundation. The pump itself can fail (University of Minnesota Extension), and the drain tile feeding it can collapse or clog with silt or roots (UMN Extension). Foundation drains covers when the code requires one; basement waterproofing cost covers interior and exterior systems.

Where a sump pump is most likely to be wanted

Counties where USDA rates a shallow water table a limit for basements on more than half the mapped land, and where at least 30% of the buildings in FEMA's flood records since 2016 that report a foundation type (20 or more records; NFIP v3, refreshed September 9, 2026) had basements. Ranked by homes (Census ACS 2020-2024). For your own county, use the soil by ZIP code lookup.

A shallow water table doesn't mean a house needs a pump: grading and gutters fix many wet basements first, and a basement above the water table can stay dry. A pump belongs where water collects below the floor.
